Sun Ae Kim is a creative thinker and a contemporary storyteller using ceramics. She started to study on ceramics in the Hong-ik University in Korea and studied MA and MPhil in Royal College of Art in London.

Sun Ae Kim is a creative thinker and a contemporary storyteller using ceramics. She is interested in how ceramics can be captured everyday stories through a contemporary interpretation of the past and present.

After leaving the RCA, she co-founded the Studio Manifold, a group of nine artists and designers whose practice grew up alongside each other within the ceramics and glass studio at the Royal College of Art.

Sun Ae collaborated with the Alexander McQueen for the Paris Fashion Week 2011/12 and exhibited her works in UK and worldwide including the Orange County Centre for Contemporary Art in LA and the Palais de Tokyo and Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris.

Sun Ae is now based in London/Seoul. She set up her own studio called ‘The Biscuit Studio’ in Korea where she explores her personal project, commission works, designs, collaboration works as well as continuing her research and writing.

 

도자기의 역사에 반영된 시대성을 현대적으로 재해석하는 도예가 김선애는 영국에 거주하면서 유럽 도자기의 역사와 문화에 영감을 받은 작업을 중점적으로 선보여왔다. 그의 작업은 테이블웨어와 다이닝문화의 관계, 술 문화와 도자기와의 관계, 영국의 각 공장에서 만들어지는 다양한 프로세스에서 차용해 온 과정 등을 일상적인 도자 오브제(Everyday Ceramic Object)로 풀어내는 것이 특징이다. 그는 매일 삶에서 마주하는 세라믹 식기부터 도자기 인형(Figurine) 등 삶과 연관이 있는 모든 아트 오브제를 큰 범주에서 일상의 도자 오브제로 다뤄왔다.

김선애의 작품은 주로 과정 안에서 결정되어지는(Process-driven) 프로세스 아트 형식으로 진행된다. 프로세스 후의 결과는 리서치 프로젝트(Practice-led research projects), 설치작품, 스튜디오 에디션, 도자 스컵쳐(One-off artworks) 등으로 다양하게 나타난다. 최근에는 도자기의 역사에서 자연스럽게 나타난 2D 이미지의 3D 구현에 관심을 갖고, 각각 다른 차원을 도자기의 언어로 표현하기 위해 빛과 공간에 대해 탐구하고 있다. 작가의 현재 진행형 프로젝트 및 작업에 대해서는 직접 운영하는 홈페이지(https://sunaekim.com/)에서 지속적인 정보를 얻을 수 있다.
