‘Chinoiseries’ was a style inspired by art and design from China, Japan and other Asian countries in the eighteenth century–Europe. While imported porcelain and lacquer ware were extremely fashionable at that time and Europeans started to make their own versions. This led to create a unique and mixed version of East and West style. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ‘BLUE: Contemporary Chinoiseries’ is my interpretation of today’s multi-culture that I have experienced, focusing on colour of blue. After living in and being educated in London, London became my second home. I might be seen as ‘Korean’ to my English contemporaries, yet I may differ from Koreans with whom I interact. Nonetheless, my studio practice is based on what I have seen, heard, and experienced, living in London as a foreigner. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ I am now working and living in Korea again. I still work intentionally and travel a lot, but my identity remains in a same situation. My experiences in different culture is visualized through my studio practice and this is new type of Chinoiseries for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ The theatrical display of the ‘BLUE: Contemporary Chinoiseries’ is exclusively planned for the Window Gallery at the KCDF gallery (Korean Craft &Design Foundation) this time. In this exhibition, I would like to share the experience of seeing the different faces of ceramics that change by time and movement of light in the space. This can be viewers’ cultural encounter. Identity of drawing room starts from the colour of wall paper in the room. On to the dark blue wall paper, I have displayed typical European wall interiors such as frames, ceramic plates as well as collection of mirrors. To increase the exhibitions theme, contemporary chinoiserie, I have selected everyday object and ready-made items from IKEA and other home decor shops that can be found easily around us.
